The Seguin Kayak

I recently decided to get a kayak lighter than my hand-built wooden Caribou, which I've paddled all along the coast of Maine for 30 years. The best boat I've ever paddled. Finding a suitable replacement was a challenge: but the Sequin has met my expectations. Extremely well-crafted, it's large cockpit makes entry and exit easy. The soft chines provide excellent initial and secondary stability. The retractable skeg is useful; although the boat tracks well in light winds and seas, it's lightness and relatively short length (less than 16') means a lot of maneuverability. I use a Greenland-style paddle, and I can brace and carve a turn easily in the Seguin. All-in-all, a worthy successor to my wonderful Caribou.

I had stayed away from the Seguin because I thought I was too big ( 5’10” 195 lbs) but as it turns out not so. Good fit plenty of freeboard , no bow wave. A very solid feel. The hull is very efficient and moves thru the water quickly. With the skeg up the boat is very light to the touch and very maneuverable, it will go anywhere. But it still paddles like a longer boat because of the waterline length compared to the overall length (15’6”). In a moderate to heavy chop it is a very dry ride. All this makes for a great day or coastal boat. I have been paddling the Seguin non stop.
